Yesterday’s Dreams

Window light casts its shadow upon this young woman, as it did her mother and grandmother,  as she reflects upon the history contained within these walls.  The old wooden ironing board leans against the wall holding memories,  laughter and tears of generations past.

Sights of Christmas reflected in the eyes of a child.

To a child, every lighted tree seems thirty feet tall, jingle bells add magic to the air and even the days leading up to this holiday seem extra-special with the aroma of freshly baked goodies, colorful blinking lights while festive music fills the air.

Christmas is that joyous time of year filled with hope as we praise and thank God for sending us our Savior from sin. How special to share this good news with children as they remind us to never lose these feelings of joy, hope and excitement.

May your Christmas season last throughout the whole year…

The history and legacy of the Mayan people also appear to be fleeting as tourism and beaches are the key to survival. It is well worth the time to tour the historic sites of Tulum and Chichen Itza with a knowledgeable guide to learn more about their interesting past.  The history of the Mayan people is kept alive through archeological sites such as these.

Epic Ice Storm of 2006

I was lying in bed early this morning listening to Minnesota Public Radio and they reminded me of the anniversary of the horrendous ice storm of 2006 along the Southwest Minnesota and Northeast South Dakota border.

I remember it began with rain that morning, changing to freezing rain which froze to any surface it touched, eventually in heavy proportions.  Power lines sagged with the weight of the ice and outages quickly ceasing any activity requiring electricity.  Some were out of power for up to two weeks.

While this power outage was inconvenient, it did force us to go without electronic devices and interact with family on a deeper level. Playing cards, board games, talking, etc. were activities often engaged in when there was no electricity.  Neighbors helped neighbors by opening their homes to those still without power and helping in whatever capacity was needed. Creative thinking was put into force as we tried to come up with Innovative ways to prepare meals and feed the family.

I captured this image near our home as the last rays of light danced across the ice on its branches. This tree is now reduced to a pile of wood as it was demolished last summer.

Acceptance…

It has taken me quite a while to come up with the very first post for our new website RJMeyerArts.  As I reflect upon my life I have found that it has been a long and winding road (to quote the Beatles). Mistakes, I’ve had a few...  (Thanks, Frank Sinatra) well, probably quite a few. But, hey, mistakes are there for a purpose, and we just need to make the best of them.  Hence, the need for acceptance.  Acceptance of our own particular stage in life.  Acceptance of doing whatever we can with our God-given talents.  Acceptance of the fact that we are here for a purpose.

2013Camino-1030468rbgblend5dmveTX2frThe above blend of images from Cruz de Ferro in northern Spain along the Camino de Santiago, depicts a pilgrim with her own thoughts and reflections. It’s all of a personal nature, as is life. Life is a journey and has its mountains, valleys and “bumps in the road” of various kinds. You just keep moving forward.  (Click on the links above for more information and history)

No matter what happens, I sincerely hope we can all enjoy the view as we move forward with RJMeyerArts.
