Looking Back…

When I first started hiking a number of years ago, a fellow hiker gave me some important advice, “Don’t forget to look back.”  When I see a memorable view I capture it with a camera so that I can revisit this moment in time. If the view is mediocre I turn back and resume hiking along my merry way with camera packed. As a photographer I have found this advice helpful, but even more I find it applies to life.

We all know life isn’t always pretty and we may stumble and step in crap from time to time. Learn, move on, without dwelling on these unfortunate moments. Likewise, there may be some unattractive elements in an image, but look beyond and see the beauty…

Love Rocks is a worldwide movement started in Forest Grove, OR in honor of two sisters, Anna and Abigail. The rock shown above at the top of Devil’s Staircase along the Scottish West Highland Way  is perched overlooking the hiking trail going down from the summit.

Click on The Love Rock Story to see their new website which includes the background story, more information, blog and step-by-step tutorial on making the love rocks.

The Love Rock is perched atop a balanced arrangement of rocks discovered along the Fife Coastal Path between Crail and Anstruther, Scotland.

I originally received this rock from a Forest Grove, Oregon family camping in the Black Hills of South Dakota. They are well acquainted with the parents and children honored by this touching tribute and participate by making and sharing Love Rocks wherever they go.  This particular rock has made the trip from Oregon, to South Dakota, to Southwest Minnesota, and on to Scotland and back.

A cold wind blows throughout the night, while snow fills the winter air. It’s warm inside my cozy home and I find myself drawn to images of dandelions basking in the warmth of the early summer sun.

Blend of three images:  Grove of trees near my house, dandelions from my lawn last summer and maternity image captured in the studio with strong backlight.  Watercolor filter, lens flare and lighting effects added with Photoshop CC.

RJMeyerArts: 2015 in review

An October Walk in Scary Gary, SD had the most hits with the Last Wildcat Swish coming in second. Click on those links to view the top posts for RJMeyerArts.com. The video Gary, SD 2015 Turtle Races earned a fifth place spot with my first attempt at GoPro video with the camera duct taped to a turtle during competition. I’m happy with the international views this year with 88 countries hitting on RJMeyerArts.com.

Now it’s time to plan my goals for 2016… I’m thinking of a blog post featuring the 2016 Gary, South Dakota 3rd of July Celebration.  Video? Still photography? Combination?

Hmmm… What do YOU think?
