Once a Wildcat…

The school is now closed and will no longer hold the cheers of a crowd, squeak of basketball shoes on the shiny, waxed floor, whistle of the refs and buzz of the clock. I close my eyes and these sounds and memories flood back to me as though it was just yesterday. Luckily, the passing of time means the memory filter allows only good vibes to flow through as I bid a final farewell to my last opportunity to click  the shutter of my camera within these walls.

Nostalgia was the theme of the day for me on August 15, 2017. For 26 years I drove this route from early August until the end of May as I prepared and taught a new group of students each year at Grant-Deuel School located in Revillo, South Dakota.

Cheer, cheer for GDHS!

Wake up the echoes cheering their best,

Send the loyal cheers on high,

Shake down the thunder from the sky,

What though the odds be great or small,

The blue and white will win over all,

While our loyal sons are marching forward to victory, Fight!

Blessed be the memory…

South Dakota Sunset

The parched prairie remains vibrant along this hillside near Gary, South Dakota. We work hard yet still find time to play hard…

America the Beautiful

These words written in 1893 are still pertinent today.

Winter… really?

Hard to believe the base for this composite image was captured May 1, 2017. No wonder we never get bored with our weather along the Minnesota/South Dakota border.

2017 Camino de Santiago: Orrison-Roncesvalles-Larrasoana

Image from “Turn to Wonder” blog.

Cold,  rain and fog accompany us as we walk through the Pyrennees from Refuge Orrison to Roncesvalles. The thumping sound of large, raindrops pelt against my rain gear… a constant drumming throughout the day. Soaked gloves offer no protection from the cold resulting in numb fingers and toes. Large flocks of sheep hunker down together, staring at the passing Pilgrims as if to say, …and they say sheep are dumb. We  later discover that the mountain was closed to those leaving St. Jean that day.

Maybe I do feel like a hiking beast…

The following stretch from Roncesvalles to Larrasoana provides a  much better day for hiking with plenty of photo opportunities due to the pleasant weather. I am much more appreciative of this wonderful weather today due to the rough weather yesterday. Minnesotans learn this lesson early in life.

Love along the Camino

Intro to Camino de Santiago

“Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.”   Maya Angelou

The Silhouette

I have been photographing silhouettes for many years dating back to the days of film, yet never tire of them. Very simple in form while triggering  the emotions, drawing you into a deeper, more meaningful moment or romantic story. Capturing silhouettes with a camera is quite simple as long as you expose for the sky turn off your flash.
